How much do we love Merriam Woods?

SOOOOOOOOO much!!

Things we love about Merriam Woods

  • watching the peregrines soar overhead (yes- climbers know about peregrines and already reached out to the audobon socuiety and establish cliff closure during nesting season.)

  • seeing the trilliums, dutchman’s britches, and other spring ephemerals in all their glory

  • walking through the boulders and trees

  • looking out from the highest cliffs and seeing mountains and the notch

  • listening to the songs of so many birds

  • climbing the featured stone, orange and grey and laced with mica and quartz

After the climbing community learned of the conservation committee and established a voluntary closure to work with the town, hundreds of outdoor enthusiasts wrote in gratitude to the town of woodstock, promising to love the land and take good care of it. Most of the post cards below are from climbers, many of whom are residetns and landowners in the Town of Woodstock, or locals who have climbers here since childhood.

Every post cards says something along the lines of:

“Thank you Town of Woodstock, for the privilege of climbing at Merriam Woods, We love the land and promise to take care of it.

The Friends of Merriam Woods want to take care of the land and work with the conservation committee to avoid overuse. We believe the Merriam Family gave the land to the town to cherish and enjoy responsibly. In past years, only a lucky few knew of this land. Now that it has grown more popular, residents and users need to take action to best preserve this resource. BUT, we should not forget the Merriam family and their intentions.

It’s not just for climbers, or hunters, or birdwatchers, the Merriam family gave this land to us all.
